It is easy to exchange routes, tracks and points of interest between ViewRanger and other applications, including our own web site. However, it is not possible to share maps between applications.

GPX stands for GPS eXchange. It is a file format used to exchange data between GPS units and mapping software. GPX files typically contain tracks, routes and points.
ViewRanger can import and export GPX files, as can most other popular mapping software. There are also file convertors available to convert to and from GPX.
ViewRanger uses this format because it is an open format, it is not closed and proprietary.
GPX is XML based and is quite easy to edit in a text editor if you need to. See for more information.

Import from website (easy method)

You can import GPX files via our web site. Log into then using the Routes & Tracks > Create routes from GPX. Browse and choose the file, then upload. A map of the route will appear. Press Save or go to route information and save. Then, on the phone, select the Menu tab (in top bar), Synchronize content and the new route will download to the phone.

Import in app

To import a GPX file into ViewRanger:
First you need to copy the GPX file onto the device using DropBox or iTunes file sharing (see related articles at the foot of this page).
Then use Menu tab, Import /export > Documents > GPX and tap on the GPX file in the list. If you select a GPX file you can use the filtered import options – for example, you can import just the tracks in a GPX file.
If you use 'Import routes' to import a file containing just waypoints, you'll be offered the chance to import the points as a route.

You can use DropBox or iTunes file sharing to copy the GPX file off the iPhone and onto your computer

Groundspeak GPX files are often used for Geocaching. They contain a lot of additional information using special private tags. ViewRanger reads two of the most important Groundspeak tags and combines them with the standard GPX tags. The Groundspeak tags it reads are the name and the long description.

There are many different file formats used to exchange GPS related data. If the application you are using does not support GPX then the best solution is to use a file convertor.
Two well known convertors are:
GPSU, which has the widest range of formats. It has a free version that limits the number of points in routes and tracks, and a paid for version that is effectively unlimited. (See note about duplicate points in routes below.)
GPSBabel, which is free but supports a smaller range of formats.
This page explains how to convert Google driving instructions into a GPX route for use in ViewRanger:

Google Earth can import GPX files, allowing you to view tracks you have recorded over aerial photos.
Most PC mapping software can import and export GPX files - for example, Memory Map, Anquet, Quo, Tracklogs and Fugawi.
Use your preferred search engine to research more into the huge world of GPX.
