The song is, as Stephen Orgel says in the foreword to Ross Duffin’s Shakespeare’s Songbook, one of the “songs that drunken revelers really did sing in Elizabethan England” (p. Shakespeare used Jones’ song the way a director might insert a snatch of Bob Dylan into a movie soundtrack, put lines from a rap song in the mouths of. But this is no ordinary lyric book. Because it’s also a journal. With lots of pages. So you can write down and keep your own ideas and inspirations. And that means it’s like two books in one. Is that why you call it a songbook journal?” Bam! There’s no sneaking anything past you.

EVANGELIZING PRESENCE: The Challenge of Social Transformation
Pasquale T. Giordano, SJ, and Nancy Russell Catan
[Brotherhood of Christian Businessmen and Professionals, Makati, MM. c2004]

Are you an authentic Evangelizing Presence? What is Integral Evangelization? Why do we need to transform society? What is our Christian responsibility and response to the ills of society?

In these times of social unrest, economic difficulties and global uncertainty, we need to be reminded of our responsibilities as Christians. This book presents a simplified and practical discussion of the little known Social Teachings of the Church covering the topics of Integral Evangelization, the Social Encyclicals, Stewardship, Human Dignity, Employer-Employee Relationships, Justice and Human Rights.

For proper perspective the authors take us back to the Holy Scriptures to look at the purpose of Creation, and the biblical view regarding the dignity of human life in society and the Christian vision of economic life. Basic honesty and justice are very much at the core of living our Christianity as the authors then demonstrate in the fifteen integrating case studies.
The talks (or chapters) are arranged in outline and modular format for easier reader understanding and handier reference for speakers and formators. At the end of each talk, there are Discussion Starters to stimulate small group discussions and further reflection on the topic.

This volume (the first of three in the Evangelizing Presence series) aims to help give various ongoing social action programs a sharper focus within the purview of the Social Teaching of the Church, so that those involved in such programs will have a clear understanding of integral evangelization and their personal, and the community’s, social responsibility as agents of dynamic and positive transformative change. The challenge of social transformation begins with us. We cannot change others, we can only change ourselves. We need to stop grumbling and criticizing, and begin to live the Gospel actively, dynamically in our lives day by day. Then, and only then, will others be able to see Christ in us and begin to change themselves. This is what is meant by integral evangelization – living out the Good News of Jesus Christ moment by moment in all areas of our lives in a way visible to others. This results in an “authentic Evangelizing Presence”.

How do you determine the value of a life? This is often asked in the face of the disturbing course that spirituality and faith are struggling with today. Materialism and industrialization per se are not the problem; rather, it is the false ideas about freedom and man’s relationship to God,about issues of life and death, and about the rationalization and relativism of Truth and Morality that are attacking the dignity and very life of man. This is the modern tragedy: the eclipse of the sense of God and man, and the resulting distortions wherein society refuses to accept and care for any life – the sick, the aged, the dysfunctional, the weak – that interferes with its “progress”. We are gradually but inexorably losing the sense of the sacred in our society. Along with this is the growing realization that true democracy and peace must be founded on God’s norm, not that of man’s shifting standards of morality.
In the midst of all the media hype about “living it up”, the need to enjoy “sexual fulfillment”, and the debates over who has the right to live, this book Evangelizing Presence: Caring for Life (second of three in the Evangelizing Presence series) brings us back into Christian focus with this comprehensive presentation on the sacredness of life, based on Pope John Paul II’s Encyclical Evangelium Vitae, “The Gospel of Life”. To build up and embrace an authentic Culture of Life, we are called to be a strong Evangelizing Presence wherever we are, wherever we go … and this book tells us how.

Burning issues of the times that include contraception, abortion, euthanasia, bioethics, health care, sexuality concerns and family planning are discussed with a variety of case studies bridging the gap between theory and life situations. Six methods of Natural Family Planning, NFP, are presented together with an actual program for NFP implementation at parish and community levels.
This is a MUST read for families, for health care practitioners, for catechists, parish and community development workers, as well as for everyone involved in family planning activities, and for all Christian communities and organizations who are committed to be an Evangelizing Presence in promoting and living out a vibrant and dynamic Culture of Life.

EVANGELIZING PRESENCE: Living the Moral Life Today

Pasquale T. Giordano, SJ and Nancy Russell Catan. [Brotherhood of Christian Businessmen and Professionals, Makati, MM. c2007]

Song Book Journal Prompts

Is it possible to live an honest, moral, and Christ-centered life in today’s often chaotic world? What is right … and what is wrong? Is it okay to compromise? These searching questions are well answered in this gem of a book through its back-to-basics discussions of the fundamentals of moral theology presented in easy-to-understand layman’s terms. This book (the third in a series of three Evangelizing Presence books) clearly defines morality, truth, authentic Christian freedom, the reality of sin, and the redeeming grace of God. It contains practical guidelines on how to properly form one’s Christian conscience and how to make morally good decisions in today’s real world.

Evangelization involves the proclamation and presentation of morality, a morality that not only proclaims the fundamental truths of faith, but is honestly and sincerely lived out in our everyday lives. We embrace Christ, but also live so that others may see Christ in us. To do this, we need to know the fundamentals of moral living, i.e. moral theology, so that we can act out our faith in active service of one another following the example of Jesus Christ. This enables us to truly experience fullness of life in Christ.
The authors give special attention to the Christian in the marketplace who is daily confronted with the real challenges of graft and corruption, the mind-influencing distortions in media and advertising, loose moral standards, shady business ethics, increasing social and environmental responsibilities, and other areas of moral concern surrounding the work environment. Particularly, the issues of the humanity of the person, freedom, moral norms, natural law, conscience, scripture, grace, the moral act, and the reality of sin are discussed. The practical application of one’s well-formed and informed conscience is shown in the challenge of making moral decisions, with specific cases involving the marketplace in the real world of today.

We are called to be heroic Christians in whatever state of life we are in, wherever God has planted us. This demands from us the exercise of moral courage in discerning the righteous, just, and loving response to the real life challenges that confront us. We recognize that for a society, community, or nation to prosper, its economic growth must be accompanied, hand-in-hand, with appropriate social responsibility anchored in sound moral values.

Edited by Louie Morales, BCBP Alabang. [BCBP Eco-Reach Foundation, Inc., Paranaque, MMla]

This 384-page book contains a collection of over 300 personal conversations, moments, reflections, quiet times, contemplative thoughts, one-on-ones with the Lord – in other words , the “prayer times” of committed members of the Brotherhood of Christian Businessmen and Professionals, gathered and edited by Bro Louie Morales, past president of the BCBP, and a founding member of the BCBP EcoReach Foundation, Inc.

The inspiration for this book springs from the social action programs of the EcoReach Foundation based on Isaiah 58:
“The kind of fasting I want is this: Remove the chains and the yoke of injustice, and let the oppressed go free. Share your food with the hungry and open your homes to the homeless poor. Give clothes to those who have nothing to wear, and do not refuse to help your own relatives.

“Then my favor will shine on you like the morning sun, and your wound will be quickly healed. I will always be with you to save you; my presence will protect you on every side. When you pray, I will answer you. When you call to me, I will respond.” Isaiah 58:6-9
How is your prayertime? This is a basic question that can answer a lot – why we are anxious, sad, lonely, angry, difficult, rebellious, problematic, adrift, cruel, hateful, and many more things we don’t want to be. The answer here is that we have simply missed our prayertime with the Lord, praising Him, lifting up our needs to Him, and listening to Him. That’s all it takes, any time, any where! Prayertime!

This prayertime collection is like a mini-recollection or retreat, featuring the personal sharings of BCBP members’ experiences with the Lord. Any one of these pages, if prayerfully read, will help the reader come into the presence of the Lord.

This publication is a project of the EcoReach Foundation and is available through the BCBP National Office for a donation to the Foundation. It is through EcoReach’s micro-finance program that our less fortunate brothers and sisters are taught “how to fish” – to take care of their families with honor by engaging in small business and not depending on dole-outs. Your generosity will help fulfill your obedience to the Lord’s commandment to “love our neighbor as ourselves”.
